BUILDING DEPARTMENT
Individuals planning to build or expand a house or business facility in the City of Reading should contact the building commissioner.
The commissioner will explain the various permits and applicable fees for all work related to new construction and/or alterations to existing buildings. The commissioner also will inform you of local and state regulations and zoning and planning ordinances.
Dan Brooks is the building commissioner; he is in the office from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. You can leave a message for him at (513) 733-3725 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Building Permits
In addition to permits being required for new construction and alterations, permits also are needed for other work projects including garages, swimming pools, HVAC units, re-roofing and sign installation. Permit costs vary, depending on the type of construction and/or work to be done. Residential projects require a $60 processing fee, plus other charges as needed. Residential work also requires three sets of project plans plus a site plan be filed with the city.
Commercial work requires a $100 processing fee, plus other charges as needed. Each project requires fours sets of project plans plus a site plan be filed with the city.
If you have any questions about what actions you need to take before proceeding with a construction or reconstruction project, please contact the Building Department at (513) 733-3725 during the hours listed above.
The city also retains the services of a certified engineer to assist in plan review and approval.
